The Andrew Rivkin Travel Review always looks for the best in Canadian travel, so let’s have a look at our nation’s largest full-service airline, Air Canada. Air Canada is the largest provider of traveler services in the Canadian market, as well as in the international market to and from Canada. Along with their regional partner Air Canada Express, the airline serves over thirty million customers every year and provides direct passenger service to nearly two hundred destinations around the world. Air Canada is a founding member of Star Alliance, which is the world’s leading air transportation network.
A Brief History of Air Canada
Air Canada was founded over 75 years ago, though it was Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) that inaugurated its first flight in September of 1937. Transcontinental flights from Montreal to Vancouver began in April of 1939 and by 1940 the airline had grown to nearly 500 employees. By 1964, TCA had become Canada’s national airline and was renamed Air Canada; the airline would be fully privatized 25 years later. Air Canada is the 15th largest commercial airline in the world and today employs over 35,000, with corporate headquarters located in Montreal, Quebec. Three hubs throughout Canada makeup the airline: Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL) and Vancouver (YVR); the largest of which is Toronto Pearson International Airport.
